Manually install an SSL certificate on my cPanel hosting

Our cPanel hosting accounts and servers support the manual installation of SSL certificates. This allows you to install SSL certificates on your cPanel account whether they are issued by GoDaddy or a 3rd party SSL provider. Deluxe and extended validation(EV) certificates, as well as SSL's for add on domains or subdomains must be installed manually.

You can watch short video of this task farther down the page.

Manually installing an SSL certificate on your cPanel account is a multi-step process.

  1. (Optional) Get a Dedicated IP Address (Shared hosting only) - You're not required to get a dedicated IP address to install an SSL on your cPanel account but having one ensures all visitors can successfully establish an SSL connection. For more information, see Add a dedicated IP address.
  2. Generate a CSR — You must create a certificate signing request(CSR) from your shared hosting account in order to request the certificate.
  3. Upload and install your SSL certificate — After receiving the SSL certificate, you need to upload it to your shared hosting account and then "turn it on" for the site you want to secure.

Note: Unlike some of our other hosting platforms, you do not need a dedicated IP address to have an SSL certificate on our cPanel shared hosting accounts. This is because it uses the Server Name Indication (SNI) protocol. However, not all browsers support SNI, which means that without a dedicated IP address, some users will not be able to successfully establish a connection over SSL.

Generate a CSR

To complete these steps, your cPanel account needs to be setup and the domain you want to use with the SSL certificate should already point to it.

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account and open your product. (Need help opening your product?)
  2. Click cPanel Admin.
  3. In the Security section, click SSL/TLS Manager.
  4. Under Certificate Signing Requests (CSR), click Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests.
  5. Complete the fields in the Generate a New Certificate Signing Request (CSR) section and click Generate.

Your CSR displays in the Encoded Certificate Signing Request section. To get your SSL certificate, you need to provide this CSR to the company issuing the certificate. If GoDaddy is issuing your certificate, you will need to request the certificate via the SSL manager. After the certificate is issued, you will need it as a CRT file.

Uploading and Installing Your Certificate

To complete these steps, you need to have the CRT file provided to you by the company who issued your SSL certificate.

  1. Upload your certificate
    1. Log in to your GoDaddy account.
    2. Click Web Hosting.
    3. Next to the cPanel account you want to use, click Manage.
    4. Click cPanel Admin.
    5. In the Security section, click SSL/TLS Manager.
    6. Under Certificates (CRT), click Generate, view, upload, or delete SSL certificates.
    7. Use the Upload Certificate section to upload the CRT file from your local machine and click Upload Certificate.
  2. Activate your certificate
    1. From the SSL/TLS Manager, click Manage SSL Sites
    2. Click Browse Certificates and select the certificate that you want to activate. This will auto-fill the fields for the certificate.
    3. Click Install Certificate.

That's it! To make sure your SSL is working, you can check it using our Certificate Checker.
